a lot shows back in the 60s and early 70s would tell a story in the theme song so anyone seeing it for the first time would know the basic premise. petticoat junction, gilligan's island, beverly hillbillies, brady bunch, the jeffersons were all made viewer friendly by setting up the show through the opening theme. that practice seems to have been lost (hmmm imagine a LOST theme song with lyrics that tried to tell that story!).
even themes with no lyrics could keep you humming a shows tune the next day just because the music was infectious. frank duvol was another great theme song writer. he left us quite a few years ago,now vic mizzy. like i said, it seems to be a lost art.
RIP to both the man and his art.
Eric Haines: ---
His song writing stands the test of time. My kids are 9 and have only seen a few episodes of these shows online, yet they know the theme songs. |
