LPs & EPs are separate to allow for releases like this www.themadmusicarchive.com/album_details.aspx?AlbumID=7543 which weren't meant to be whole albums. It was in the 80's that the industry went barking insane and tried a bunch of formats to sell to people who were still too outraged to pay $17 for a CD that only cost 98¢ to make. I still think it's a big ripoff.

This distinction in formats is the correct method and is done in even more detail by other sites who specialize in this sort of thing. 'Record' is too generic a term for vinyl. To call everything that's not an mp3 or a CD a record is 'doing it wrong' as 'teh internets' say because it shows a great lack of detail. This site is meant to be the final word on this genre, so we might as well dot the 'i's and cross the 't's. If we don't, someone else will.

If anything, there should be more options on that list when adding an album release. For a time, I've wanted the various video releases- videotapes, DVDs, "TV Shows" not released on a format- that sort of thing, to be an option as there's lots of dementia on TV (or there was, anyway) as well. All of the formats should be listed as an option when adding a release on an album page.

Curious...is there a way the "LP" and "EP" types can be re-tagged as "Record"? Because LPs (which are simply "Albums") and EPs can be any type of format nowadays. Granted when the terms first came about they described types of vinyl, but that's no longer the only case.

I originally thought of a relabel as "Vinyl", but that doesn't take shellac and plastic cylinders (which were also commonly called "records") into account.
